Verslag eerste week

Na een dagje rust in Murphy's Creek, hebben we vrijdag het koude weer getrotseerd (wind en regen) om in Toowoomba te gaan shoppen: wollen sloffen, warme pull-overs en dikke kousen! Twee valiezen vol sandalen en bain-soleils waren echter niet voldoende om ons warm te houden. En te bedenken dat ons kast thuis vol ligt met warme kledij! Het weekend bracht mooi weer: een goed excuus voor een wafelenbak en dus hebben we wat mede-vlamingen uitgenodigd om An haar nieuw wafelijzer in te huldigen. Thomas zijn trampoline was ook een grote hit. BTW: de wafels waren enorm goed gelukt: we hadden niks anders verwacht, natuurlijk!
Maandag zijn we dan naar de Bunya Mountains vertrokken waar we een huisje hadden gehuurd: drie dagen vol mooie boswandelingen en 3000 vogelfoto's later, zijn we gisteren teruggekeerd met een 'snotvalling'. Vandaag dus naar de apotheek voor strepsils, hoestsiroop en neusspray, ed. Snel een schietgebedje voor mooi weer! Tot de volgende update - Dirk en Mich

I am Australian

Last Wednesday, August 13th, I became Australian: After some long weeks and months of waiting for the 'bureaucracy' to do its work, the day was finally there. I can't say we were excited; more happy to get it over and done with. And so we did. There was a brief ceremony in the Laidley Council Chamber during Council meetings (gemeenteraad). There were six more 'candidates' and we each took the pledge to stay loyal to Australia etc etc...

Zoals jullie waarschijnlijk al hadden opgemerkt, staat in de vorige tekst dat mijn zoon zijn Engels niet heel goed is....
Zijn Engels is heel behoorlijk, hoor...Maar zijn Nederlands staat op een laag pitje.

Snottebel

Hoewel Thomas zijn Engels nog steeds op een heel laag niveau is (vrijwel niet-bestaande), leert hij af en toe een nieuw woordje. Zo vertelde hij gisterenavond aan zijn papa dat Maarten (zijn vriend en wel-Vlaams-sprekende-Vlaming) 'snot' 'een snottebel' noemt. Hij vertelde ons ook dat hij eerst vermoedde dat Maarten een nieuw hondje had dat 'snottebel' heette, maar dat hij later tot de conclusie was gekomen dat het zich wel degelijk om neussnot ging. (De overhandiging van een zakdoek heeft daar wel geholpen, denk ik)
En zo leert hij toch elke dag iets bij...
Geen slechte naam voor een hond trouwens, vond mijn echtgenoot.

Australia Zoo

Last Tuesday, we left Murphy's Creek at 6.30 am for a two-day trip to the Sunshine Coast, where we met up with Alan's American friends Glenn and Janet. The thermometer in the car indicated it was going to be a cold day: zero degrees Celsius and we were all rugged up. Once at the Coast, however, it was a warm 24 degrees...
We spent Tuesday at Australia Zoo, where we saw otters, elephants, crocodiles, eagles, kangaroos, snakes, wombats, tigers and many more.(see photos) A great day was had by all. The entry to the zoo is not the cheapest (52 dollars per person) but it has to be said that the animals live there in wonderful conditions and have a lot of space and a "natural" environment.
On Wednesday, after saying goodbye to Glenn and Janet, who were heading up north, we took to the beach. On one of the shortest and coldest days of the year, Alan and Tom went in the ocean...
We got home on Wednesday night very tired...and Alan had to hit the exams straight away...after a last great effort last night ( until 2 am), the holidays are finally near.
