Mee met de rest van de wereld

Langzaam maar zeker begint Australie een beetje meer up-to-date te zijn met de rest van de wereld. Acht jaar geleden kon ik hier zelfs geen ‘choco’ vinden, maar daar kwam vrij snel verandering in; de nutella is hier weliswaar in plastieken potten, maar ons bookes smaken evengoed. Een paar jaar later begon de bakker echte chocoladekoeken te verkopen...vooruitgang. Sinds dan is er veel veranderd; o.a. door de komst van Aldi vinden we hier nu meerdere Europese producten en electrische aparaten zoals een gourmet-toestel. Belgische producten zijn ook erg in trek. Zo verkopen ze in de supermarkt nu cote d’or, weliswaar heel duur, maar beter dan niks. En we blijven er maar op vooruit gaan: Een paar maanden terug vond ik in de K-mart sloggi-onderbroeken!!! Vorige week zagen Nele en ik in de venster van een winkel een echt Belgisch wafelijzer en vandaag in Big W stond er een rek vol cd’s van.....Helmut Lotti!! Een beetje Belgie in Australie.
Als ik mij dus helemaal thuis wil voelen, kan ik dus wafels eten met choco terwijl ik naar Helmut Lotti luister in mijn sloggi-onderbroek....;-)

Sinterklaas Kapoentje

Dat liedje hoor ik nu al een ganse dag...Thomas kan er maar niet genoeg van krijgen.
Hij was enorm tevreden met de sint zaterdag. Toch enkele vraagjes: Waar was zwarte piet? Hoe komt het dat de zak met speelgoed er al stond en de sint die niet bij zich had? Waarom was de sint in het roze? (antwoord van mij: dat is zijn zomerkledij)

Hier is Thomas in zijn uniform van St-Anthony's. Ik had geluk vorige week op een tweede-handsverkoop om een paar stukken te kunnen kopen.

Over vanalles

Eindelijk nog eens nieuws: Ondertussen heb ik mij wel een laptop aangeschaft met alles erop en eraan...maar heb ik nog altijd geen goede internet-aansluiting....'t is een kwestie van een paar dagen nu. Hopelijk zal ik dan wat vaker verslag uitbrengen.
Ik denk dat ik kan zeggen dat de zomer wel degelijk begonnen is...en 't is een echte zomer met heel warme, doefe dagen en met storm 's avonds en 's nachts. Onze vijver is deze nacht totaal opgevuld. Het is 4 1/2 jaar geleden sinds dat nog eens het geval was....een dag nadat we zijn thuisgekomen met baby Thomas.
Over 'baby' Thomas gesproken: ik heb gisteren zijn uniform gekocht en hij is nu zo-goed-als klaar om met school te beginnen. Foto's van Thomas in uniform zet ik volgende week op de site. Zijn papa was in shock: "het is nog maar een paar maanden geleden dat hij geboren is en nu loopt hij hier in zijn schooluniform rond" Jawel, de tijd vliegt voorbij. Het lijkt nog maar gisteren toen we in Geraardsbergen op de Sint stonden te wachten (Remember...last year) en nu komt die goede oude man naar Brisbane met de ferry. Zaterdag gaan alle Belgjes er naartoe...en wij dus ook. Verslag volgt dus ook volgende week, met foto's.
Nog drie weekjes school, kindergarten en dergelijke en dan begint de grote vakantie... de eerste week gaan wij naar Caloundra om wat te bekomen van het drukke jaar en dan vliegen we weer op de terras - nog niet om op te rusten, maar om aan te werken-, die ondanks het weer (te warm of te nat) wel degelijk begint op te schieten.

De komende drie weken zullen dan ook gevuld worden met kerst- en sinterklaasfeestjes .... de kerstman zit al in de winkels en de versieringen drijven mijn zoon zot ("I love Christmas too much mama"). Toen we daarstraks de kerstman tegenkwamen was hij helemaal van zijn melk en was hij zelfs zijn eigen naam vergeten. Ach, de magie van Kerstmis.....

Verslag eerste week

Na een dagje rust in Murphy's Creek, hebben we vrijdag het koude weer getrotseerd (wind en regen) om in Toowoomba te gaan shoppen: wollen sloffen, warme pull-overs en dikke kousen! Twee valiezen vol sandalen en bain-soleils waren echter niet voldoende om ons warm te houden. En te bedenken dat ons kast thuis vol ligt met warme kledij! Het weekend bracht mooi weer: een goed excuus voor een wafelenbak en dus hebben we wat mede-vlamingen uitgenodigd om An haar nieuw wafelijzer in te huldigen. Thomas zijn trampoline was ook een grote hit. BTW: de wafels waren enorm goed gelukt: we hadden niks anders verwacht, natuurlijk!
Maandag zijn we dan naar de Bunya Mountains vertrokken waar we een huisje hadden gehuurd: drie dagen vol mooie boswandelingen en 3000 vogelfoto's later, zijn we gisteren teruggekeerd met een 'snotvalling'. Vandaag dus naar de apotheek voor strepsils, hoestsiroop en neusspray, ed. Snel een schietgebedje voor mooi weer! Tot de volgende update - Dirk en Mich

I am Australian

Last Wednesday, August 13th, I became Australian: After some long weeks and months of waiting for the 'bureaucracy' to do its work, the day was finally there. I can't say we were excited; more happy to get it over and done with. And so we did. There was a brief ceremony in the Laidley Council Chamber during Council meetings (gemeenteraad). There were six more 'candidates' and we each took the pledge to stay loyal to Australia etc etc...

Zoals jullie waarschijnlijk al hadden opgemerkt, staat in de vorige tekst dat mijn zoon zijn Engels niet heel goed is....
Zijn Engels is heel behoorlijk, hoor...Maar zijn Nederlands staat op een laag pitje.

Snottebel

Hoewel Thomas zijn Engels nog steeds op een heel laag niveau is (vrijwel niet-bestaande), leert hij af en toe een nieuw woordje. Zo vertelde hij gisterenavond aan zijn papa dat Maarten (zijn vriend en wel-Vlaams-sprekende-Vlaming) 'snot' 'een snottebel' noemt. Hij vertelde ons ook dat hij eerst vermoedde dat Maarten een nieuw hondje had dat 'snottebel' heette, maar dat hij later tot de conclusie was gekomen dat het zich wel degelijk om neussnot ging. (De overhandiging van een zakdoek heeft daar wel geholpen, denk ik)
En zo leert hij toch elke dag iets bij...
Geen slechte naam voor een hond trouwens, vond mijn echtgenoot.

Australia Zoo

Last Tuesday, we left Murphy's Creek at 6.30 am for a two-day trip to the Sunshine Coast, where we met up with Alan's American friends Glenn and Janet. The thermometer in the car indicated it was going to be a cold day: zero degrees Celsius and we were all rugged up. Once at the Coast, however, it was a warm 24 degrees...
We spent Tuesday at Australia Zoo, where we saw otters, elephants, crocodiles, eagles, kangaroos, snakes, wombats, tigers and many more.(see photos) A great day was had by all. The entry to the zoo is not the cheapest (52 dollars per person) but it has to be said that the animals live there in wonderful conditions and have a lot of space and a "natural" environment.
On Wednesday, after saying goodbye to Glenn and Janet, who were heading up north, we took to the beach. On one of the shortest and coldest days of the year, Alan and Tom went in the ocean...
We got home on Wednesday night very tired...and Alan had to hit the exams straight away...after a last great effort last night ( until 2 am), the holidays are finally near.

It's winter in Murphy's Creek

Winter is here! The thermometer in our lounge room read 8 Degrees Celsius on Sunday morning. The days are still nice and sunny though, with a comfortable 22 degrees at lunch time. Although this probably seems like Summer for people in the Northern Hemisphere, it gets quite cold inside without central heating.
We have enjoyed the cooler weather and have spent quite a bit of time in the garden, putting in a vegetable garden. Tom planted radishes, lettuce, snow peas, cabbage, spinach, leek and lots more. He has also enjoyed "playing" with his new chickens. They are very tame and love being picked up bu my son, who twirls them around in the air while singing 'Spiderchook" (see The Simpsons-movie: Spiderpig)

A lot of words from movies are creeping in to Tom's daily vocabulary. Here are some examples: D'Oh (simpsons), "Oh Man" (dora), "sugarbumbs" (the Joker in Batman), "Pink-eyed-freak" (Flushed Away), mostly directed at his dad when wrestling together."I've still got the moves" (Spiderman), "My-brother-from-another-mother" (Sharktale), "I'm melting" (Wizard of Oz) and many more.
This does not mean that he spends all his time in front of the TV; he actually prefers playing oustside riding his bicycle, playing on the swings, hanging upside down on the trapeze or playing with his two dogs Gomez and Charlie.

Furthermore our lives have been busy as usual: Alan is swamped with schoolwork (the time of the year for it), Tom still goes to kindergarten on Wednesdays and Fridays and playgroup on Mondays. I have been doing some private tutoring in French. Looking forward to the school holidays in two weeks time when we will finally get started on our deck. No rest for the wicked...

I want to be a superhero

It is finally decided: Tom is going to be a superhero when he grows up. As of yet, he cannot decide whether it will be the Phantom, Spiderman or Batman....

Playschool fun

We had a wonderful time at the playschool concert last Wednesday. All the "classics" were played and sang: "Incy wincy spider", "the scarecrow", "the wheels on the bus" and many more kids' favourites.

Citizenship Test

I successfully completed the Citizenship Test this morning. 100%.
This means that I can now start the application process and become an Australian citizen. Here are a few of the questions I was asked:
* Colours of the Aboriginal Flag?
* What happened in 1967 that was important for all Australians?
* Who can change the Australian Constitution?
* Constitutional Head of State?
* Name of the Australian anthem?
* When was the Gold Rush?
* What is the job of the Australian Parliament?
* How long have aboriginal people lived in Australia?

Weekend at Seaworld

Last Sunday, Tom and I left Murphy's Creek for the Gold Coast. We had booked a room at Seaworld Resort with Maarten (Tom's best friend)and his mum Nele and little sister Lien. The weather gods were with us, as the Gold Coast was basking in the sun and we hit the pool upon arrival. The boys had a marvellous time on the water park (Tom's latest word "awesome" was tossed around here) and in the pool. The afternoon flew by and by 5pm we had a few very tired boys. After a good - although fairly short - night, we were ready to hit the breakfast buffet. We all filled our tummies and were ready to go and discover Seaworld, but not before every one's favourite Sesame Street-character Elmo paid a visit to the hotel. After a few soft red hugs, we finally jumped on the monorail to the park. There we saw sharks, dolphins, penguins, polar bears, fish, seals, more dolphins and went on a dozen or so rides. Needless to say that the three kids fell asleep in the car on the way home...totally exhausted, but very pleased with themselves (as was I). I can definitely recommend a visit to Seaworld and the adjacent resort to anybody visiting Australia or any Australians wishing to have a short break. I know it will be an adventure that will be talked about in our house for several months to come.

Thomas and the 'Giant' Gourd

Last week, Thomas discovered a 'giant' guord (kallebas) in our garden, which we had grown from seed, but forgotten about. He fell in love with the big plant and even took it to bed with him for the first few nights. He is going to let it dry so that he can decorate it later. Today, Thomas took the guord to Kindy, where it proved to be a big hit as well; his little friends were fighting over who could hold it first.....And Tom had a great smile on his face: His guord was a hit!

Home Gym

After the devastating verdict on Alan's knee, i.e. no more running, the guys have been busy setting up a home gym in our shed. Tommy is right into boxing and spends quite a bit of time every day hitting the new punching bag.

Toowoomba Show

Went to the Toowoomba Show last night. It was Tommy's first show ever. Although it rained quite heavily at first, we still had a great time: We took advantage of yet another rain shower to shelter in the circus tent and we enjoyed some old-fashion circus acts. Afterwards, we visited the animal nursery where Tom got to pet and feed a kid goat. A little train ride took us around the showgrounds and we soaked it all in (literally). Although the fireworks at the end were a bit of a let-down (too much show, not enough bang), Tom went home feeling great about his first show...and with a Batman-showbag in tow.

Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing for three days last weekend at Glenlyon Dam with Emma and Kate and our Australian Belgian friends Nele and Stijn, and their children Maarten and Lien. Although the fish were not on the bite, we still managed to catch ourselves a few tasty yellow-bellies and one catfish. The girls were happy to catch a fish each (Emma's first fish ever). We also enjoyed a relaxing boat ride on the dam, saw a few turtles and lots of kangaroos. Got home tired, but happy.
